The Man on the Roof

One night I was coloring in my living room, and I heard a noise coming from the roof, but I didn’t think about it much. Strangely, during our family prayer we heard it again. There had been police search helicopters flying in our neighborhood earlier, so we wondered if someone might be hiding on our roof. After the prayer, my dad called the police. They said some officers would come right away.

When the police arrived, they told us they had been searching for someone. The helicopters came back and saw that there was someone lying on the flat roof above our living room. Police officers with guns shouted to the man to come down.

My mom gathered us into one room and tried to comfort my brother who was crying. I felt scared and started to cry too, but then I got a feeling of peace. I remembered when a man spoke in church and told a story from his past when he made some bad choices and was able to repent and be happy again. That same day, my Primary teacher had taught us about repentance. When I remembered those things, I felt like I should say a prayer that whoever was on our roof could find his way to happiness.

The police were able to get the man down. He wasn’t dangerous, but the police said he was very drunk. After the police left, we talked about what had just happened. My parents told us that usually people who use drugs and alcohol are having a hard time in their lives. I told my parents about my prayer. My mom was amazed that I thought to pray for the man’s well being instead of feeling scared for myself. I went to bed that night with a happy feeling and knew that God would help the man on the roof.

How the Unicorns Went Extinct

Day 1
Today my grandfather finished building his ark. He says the world will be flooded and the only way we will survive is to get into the boat. P.S. , the boat is filled with animals, and half of them are either poisonous, carnivorous, or huge enough to trample you. No one decided to come with us. Surprise. Everyone, including most of our family, thinks he’s crazy. But, we have had cloudy days in the past week, so my whole family is on the ark. If it doesn’t rain tomorrow, we can always get off.

Day 7
It definitely rained. In fact, it still is raining. Our village is flooded and everyone is waist- deep in muddy water. I’m glad I’m dry in the boat, even if I have to share my room with pigs.

Day 13
As I write, the bottom floor of the ark is being filled with water. Earlier today, a whale crashed into the side of the boat, breaking a hole into the unicorn’s room. Unfortunately, we couldn’t save the unicorns. Luckily, though, there were only two species of animals at the bottom of the ark; the sheep and the unicorns. We relocated the sheep to my room.

Day 22
The hole is small so the water is only leaking a little, but even so, it is coming up the stairs to the second floor. Hopefully the rain will stop soon or we will have to move more animals. And there are wild cats on the second floor.

Day 30
The second floor has flooded, and we tried moving the tigers, but as soon as we opened the door, they bolted. My uncles, Ham and Japheth are horrible tiger hunters. I’m glad tigers can’t open doors or sheep wouldn’t exist anymore.

Day 35
The ark should have sunk a long time ago, but even with two and a half floors flooded, it still floats. Also, the rain isn’t pouring as much as before. Hopefully this means we can get off soon.

Day 40
The rain has finally stopped! But I’m sure that it will be a long time until the water goes down. For now, we wait, and thank the lord that we survived. Minus the unicorns.

The end

Stop Motion Moon Phases

While perusing Pinterest for homeschool ideas earlier this week, I stumbled on a Teachers Pay Teachers file utilizing the free app Stop Motion Studio. My kids love making movies, so I knew they would be uber-excited about this project. For the past few days, my 12-year-old has become a stop-motion-movie-making machine. Their first project was inspired by the Pinterest Pin I found. It outlines how to make a stop-motion movie showing the phases of the moon.

After making their first video, the kids moved on to Lego stop-motion. It's been so fun to watch them take off with it and perfect their techniques through trial and error. I love it when "school" is something they want to spend all day doing because they're having so much fun.

Here's their first stop-motion masterpiece...

And here's another brilliant stop-motion video we watched over and over 'cause it was so clever and beards are so cool...

Have your kids ever made stop-motion movies? Share them in the comments below! My kids and I would love to see them!
